A Day in the Life
Character List Cameron-Son Caroline-Mother Stella-Daughter (5 years older than Cameron) Payton- Friend of Cameron, same age Scene 1: Age 7 (Lights up on the bedroom of a young child. A small twin sized bed with Lightning McQueen sheets sits next to a small side table and lamp. Legos and laundry are scattered across the entire room. A bookshelf with young children's books sits at the foot of the bed. We hear music playing down the stairs, offstage) Caroline (from offstage): Cameron! Your room better be clean when I come up there or you don’t get time on the Wii! (A young boy, age 7 enters running in, a smirk across his face. He plops onto his bed) Cameron: Mom, it’s all clean! (He finally looks around and sees his room is a disaster. He picks up a pile of clothes and shoves it in a drawer. He begins to kick the legos under his bed, his back turned to the door. He does not notice his sister appear at the door. She stands in the doorway, peering down onto Cameron kicking things under his bed.) Stella: (judgemental and sarcastic) Oh yeah mom, so clean. Spotless. Cameron: Go away Stella Stella: (entering the room and crossing to the bed) What I can’t watch your suffering? (Cameron shoves more things under his bed, clearing overflowing the space) Dude, you can’t put everything under there, mom will know. You got to spread it out, like this. (takes a bunch of legos and puts it in a drawer) Cameron: Thanks. How do you know that? Stella: You think your room was messy, you should’ve seen mine when I was your age. Mom would lose it when she saw my room. C’mon let’s go play Mario Kart. (Both exit and then blackout) Scene 2: Age 8 (Lights up on the bedroom, the messy legos are in a small pile in the corner. The once untidy bed is kind of made (there was a failed attempt to make the bed) and there are dirty clothes in a hamper. Cameron runs in, followed by a boy his age.) Cameron: Here’s my room (he throws his backpack onto his bed) what do ya think? Kid: It’s nice. (beat) Uhh do you do anything with those legos or do they just sit in the corner like that? Cameron: I use them. I just don’t like the little books that come with them so I make them my own things, like airplanes and monkeys. (small beat) I make people, too. I can make one of you, Payton if you want. Payton: Oh yeah! That would be so cool! Thanks bro! Cameron: It will take me some time to do. Let’s go outside to the park now, and I’ll work on it later. (Payton exits and Cameron starts to follow. He stops, takes a moment to look at his legos and smiles. Then runs out to Payton)
