The word Moving carries powerful weight behind it. So let’s define it.
What is moving? And how do we do that? The word moving marks an event or person that evokes a strong emotional response. The word moving is marked by the act of movement; by the act of changing posture; the act of causing motion. These definitions connect to how it’s strictly impossible to engage in moving without changing your current state. When the physical aspect of moving is brought up, the question is whether to move up, move down, move backwards, or move forward. However the only way to make progress is to move forward, as shown in history. Sojourner Truth. A woman who escaped bondage, and became a leader in both the Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s Rights Movement. Gloria Richardson. An activist who advocated for peaceful change but who also believed in violent protests as well. She later received the name “The Lady General of Civil Rights”. Madam CJ Walker. An entrepreneur and supporter of black internationalist movements that fought against events such as the U.S. Occupation of Haiti and the colonization of Togo and Cameroon by European Powers. Sojourner Truth, Gloria Richardson, and Madam CJ Walker are black women who succeeded in MOVING FORWARD and bringing forth change. Not only did they take ACTION, but they took action in a world that was changing into an uncomfortable setting. These women are proof that to move forward is to CHANGE. They fought against oppression so that they could move forward. If you pay close attention to black history, you’d see that we are in a position similar to our black predecessors. They say history repeats itself, but what if I told you that you ARE history. That you are a part of the cycle of MOVING, the cycle of moving forward, the cycle of moving forward in a changing world. It is now up to us to move forward by creating positive change in the midst of our changing world. We can all agree that we’re in the presence of one. It’s become impossible to overlook the issues that pollute our world. From issues such as the pandemic, to racial discrimination, and even the political tremoil that has polluted our world. We are living in the midst of police brutality; which has led to the loss of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, Elijah McClain, Atatiana Jefferson, and our other fallen angels. The state of the world has made it impossible to choose stagnancy over progression. Stagnancy is the protector of oppression, and as I said previously, the only way to make progress is to move forward. The Black Lives Matter Movement is an example of moving forward in a changing world. The movement was started by three women who could no longer deal with the state of idleness that the world was in. Their hashtag succeeded in revitalizing our thirst for justice and equality. What we as a community need to realize is that change can be created on both a smaller and larger scale. We are capable of creating change, of moving forward through taking action. Your community is in need of your influence, your voice, your effort, your presence. You are a part of the next generation of individuals who move forward. Although we have had black leaders pave the way, it is important for us to create our own legacy for those who will follow us. I will leave you with this, WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH YOUR OPPORTUNITY? Will you take the steps to become an individual who commits to moving forward? Or will you let the changing world pass you by?
